SSD HDD Caddy 9.5mm vs 12.7mm
(This blog article is based on the old one on our old website 111Tech.com) About comparision of SSD/HDD Caddy 9.5mm and 12.7mm.
SSD/HDD Caddy 9.5mm and 12.7mm
If we were to DIY install a SSD on a laptop, we usually also buy a SSD Caddy, and we also need to know that this caddy has 2 different thicknesses: 9.5 mm and 12.7 mm.
Which SSD Caddy thickness is right for our laptop?
Note: If you buy a 12.7mm SSD Caddy, you can not plug it into a laptop with a 9.5mm optonal drive.
How do we know which SSD Caddy thickness is right for our laptop?
The easiest and best way is to manually measure the thickness of the optical drive on the laptop, because we normally install the SSD in the location of the laptop optical drive, unless you are replacing the laptop hard drive with an SSD. Installing a SSD to the original hard disk location does not require additional caddy.
For example, we can directly measure the optical drive's thickness without dissembling it. We can see the thickness is just 9.5mm in the case as below:
If you want to measure more accurately, you can dissemble the optical drive and measure it. In the case which we mentioned above, after we dissembled the optical drive, we measured the thickness is still 9.5mm. So we confirmed that we need to buy a 9.5mm thick caddy.
